Argentine companies Novatech and Coradir have presented the first set top box (STB) for the nation's digital terrestrial TV sysem.
The new box will be marketed at US$210 by various household appliances and computing chain stores starting next month. The initial plan is to first supply the domestic market and extend later to the rest of the Latino countries that have adopted the ISDB-T digital technology (Brazil, Peru, Venezuela, and Chile).
Shippers are now deploying pre-production test models ahead of bulk shipments to start selling in February. The scope will be limited to homes reached by tests performed by Channel 7 (covering only a few districts in the capital city of the country), which are interested in watching the Soccer World Cup South Africa 2010 on HD. 'Initially, we will make 5 thousand units and then we will produce on demand,' according to Adrian Lamandía, Novatech's CEO, talking to NexTV Latam.
However, the STB will not be interactive as yet as precise standards are still pending on technical specifications, including the return channel and content handling. It will have an electronic programming guide, MPEG 4 decoding, HD, a USB port, Coradib Conditional Access and is expected to be upgraded to support Ginga middleware during March. By mid 2010, another model will be released adding DVR functionality.
Local reports say that the government is to buy one million units for less affluent districts. The executive power stated that although Planning Minister Julio De Vido has expressed his intention to buy to local companies, it is only an intention as no purchase orders have been issued yet. It has not been defined either, whether the Government would subsidize the equipment. 'We hope they will want to. I think that they will surely do something to digitalize the whole pool of 12 million television sets,' he forecast.
Memory supplier Novatech was in charge of assembly and quality assurance, and computer and monitor manufacturer Coradir, of engineering development and final assembly at their Buenos Aires and San Luis plants. SEI Circuitos, DH Tavini, Albano Cozzuol, Codesil, Quais and Alfagraf also participated. Local competition to the project will be represented by the 25 companies that are part of Cadieel (the Argentine Chamber of Electronic, Electro-mechanic, Lighting, Telecommunication, Informatics and Automatic Control Industries), and Adimra (the Association of Metallurgic Industrials of the Argentine Republic).
However, the one fact in all this is that - as expected - consumers are paying a high price for the ISDB technology. While around the rest of the world DVB-based boxes sell for as low as $25, Argentina's viewers will be paying some ten-times this price for a low-specified box.
